Airport & Local Transportation Information

We've compiled some details to get you to your destinations during Brownfields 2008. This page is your source for information on public transportation options (including the Detroit "People Mover" light rail system), local SMART buses, taxis, regional transportation (train and bus), car rental facilities, and driving directions to Cobo Center. Please note that selected major downtown locations in Detroit are easily reachable by public transportation; these locations include the airport, hotels, and Cobo Center.

Special Airfare 
 
The official airline carriers and reservation instructions for Brownfields 2008 are:

  • American Airlines – Reservations and schedule information may be obtained by calling the American Airlines Meeting Services desk at 800-433-1790 (toll free), Monday-Sunday, 6:00 a.m. – midnight Central Time (700-midnight EST). Reference Authorization Number A5658AA.  A $10 fee will be charged for all tickets purchased by telephone.  Once tickets are issued, name changes are not allowed.  (Reservations by any agency must include the following statement in the General Facts field of the PNR: AA Contract Booking A5658AA. Failure to provide this information will result in auto-cancellation of unticketed space.)
  • Northwest Airlines – Reservations and schedule information may be obtained by calling Meetings and Incentives Staff at 800-328-1111 (toll free), Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Central Time (800-2000 EST).  Reference WorldFile Number NMC2L.   A $10USD/$11CD non-refundable ticketing fee will be assessed for tickets issued by Northwest.  Paper tickets issued in eligible e-ticket markets are subject to a paper ticket surcharge.  Once ticketed, if changes occur, an administrative fee will apply in addition to any difference in the fare.

Golden Limousine Service - Airport/Hotel Transportation

The Brownfields 2008 Conference has selected Golden Limousine, Inc. of Ann Arbor, Michigan as the exclusive provider of airport-to-hotel transportation for the Brownfields 2008 Annual Conference in Detroit.  At their request, conference attendees will be transported from Detroit Metro Airport to their hotels aboard luxury shuttles.

  • Downtown Hotels 

Detroit Marriott, Marriott Courtyard, Hilton Garden Inn, Sheraton Detroit Riverside (formerly Hotel Pontchartrain), Atheneum Suites, Holiday Inn Express

  • Fare:    $25 one-way and $40 round trip. (This fare is available by advance reservation.) $27 one-way and $54 round trip. (This fare is available on-site paid by cash or credit card.)
  • Shuttle Service – Arrivals rotating every hour - Departures rotating every hour – (see below for the times)

When:   Airport-to-hotel service will be available on the Brownfields “peak” days of:

  • May 4, 2008      10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
  • May 5, 2008      8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Where: A Golden Limousine Greeter will be at Smith and McNamara terminals on the baggage claim levels.

Hotel-to-airport service will be available on the Brownfields “peak” day of:

  • May 7, 2008      7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Making Reservations

To ensure space aboard airport shuttles, make your reservation for ground transportation through the secure Brownfields web portal at http://www.goldenlimo.com/brownfields.html or by calling (800) 300-5151, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Golden Limousine encourages participants to make their shuttle reservations by May 1, 2008. Advance shuttle reservations will be $25 one-way and $40 round trip.

Participants of the conference, without a confirmed reservation, may pay for their airport shuttle transportation upon arrival. Onsite reservations can be made upon arrival at the airport on May 4, 2008 from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and May 5, 2008 from 8:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

  1. Participants will be greeted in the Smith and McNamara Terminals by a Golden Limousine International employee and taken to the shuttle vehicle.
  2. Confirmed reservation passengers have priority seating on the shuttle vehicles and will be allowed to board first.
  3. Unconfirmed passengers will pay an airport greeter onboard the shuttle vehicle. Payment can be made by cash or credit card. Onsite reservations will be $27 one-way and $54 round trip.

Participants of the conference may arrange any ground transportation needs at the Golden Limousine International Help Desk, at Cobo Center. The Help Desk will be open Tuesday, May 6, 2008 from 12:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. and on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Onsite shuttle reservations made at Cobo Center will be $27.00. All other transportation requests will be charged at “As Directed” rates. Payment can be made at Cobo Center via cash or credit card.

When onsite Golden Limousine International staff is not available, reservations may be made by calling (800) 300-5151, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Most economical methods of travel when shuttle service is not available

On May 1-3, May 6, and May 8-10 for groups of 3 or more traveling together, when shuttle service is not available, Golden Limousine offers sedan or SUV service for arriving and departing conference attendees.  Conference attendees utilizing this service will be met by a Golden Limousine chauffeur in the baggage claim area.  The driver will have a sign bearing the name of the passengers.

Brownfields rates for transportation from the airport to Detroit on non-peak shuttle days and hours are:

  • Sedan (up to 3 passengers)                  DTW – Detroit                $83.50
  • SUV (up to 6 passengers)                     DTW – Detroit                $121.50
  • Van (up to 10 passengers)                     DTW – Detroit                $173.50
  • Mini Bus (up to 30 passengers)              DTW – Detroit                $386.00
  • Motor Coach (up to 56 passengers)       DTW – Detroit                $526.00

Above fares include 10% fuel surcharge, 20% gratuity, and the airport access fee.

Brownfields rates for transportation from Detroit to the airport on non-peak shuttle days and hours are:

  • Sedan (up to 3 passengers)                  Detroit – DTW                $72.50
  • SUV (up to 6 passengers)                     Detroit – DTW                $110.50
  • Van (up to 10 passengers)                     Detroit – DTW                $162.50

Above fares include 10% fuel surcharge and 20% gratuity.

Group Shuttle Rates: Pre-paid Round Trip Prices Only

  • 10         passengers                                          $336.00
  • 11-20    passengers                                          $601.00
  • 21-35    passengers                                          $741.00
  • 36-56    passengers                                          $1021.00

Above prices are for roundtrips. Passengers must arrive at the airport terminal at the same time. There are no refunds for canceled group shuttle reservations. The above rates include the airport access fee for airport pick ups, fuel surcharge and gratuity.

Local Public Transportation

Light Rail:

  • Detroit People Mover is an economical means to travel between about one dozen locations and neighborhoods in the downtown area. It does not travel between downtown and Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Fare is $.50 per trip. The service is open seven days a week, from early morning until midnight or later. (Sunday service begins at noon.)

Taxis:

  • Airport transportation: Fare from the airport to Cobo Center is about $41 plus gratuity. Metro Airport Taxis are located at the Ground Transportation stand at the terminals. \
  • City transportation: For transportation to locations in Detroit and nearby suburbs, the initial charge is about $3, with a mileage charge of approximately $.20 per 1/8 mile (or $1.60 per mile).

Automobile Rental Services

Below are two options for attendees who are planning to rent a car during their stay in Detroit.  Brownfields 2008 attendees will receive discounted rates from both Avis and Budget.  After arriving and retrieving your luggage, meet the Avis or Budget shuttle outside the baggage claim area.

Avis 

With great discounts and the highest levels of service, there’s never been a better reason to rent with Avis!  Brownfields 2008 conference attendees may make reservations online or by calling Avis directly at 1-800-331-1600.  You will be asked to provide the Avis Worldwide Discount (AWD) Number A266199 when making reservations over the phone or through the web site, www.avis.com.

Directions from Detroit Metropolitan Airport
Start traveling southwest on Worldgate Place, which becomes John D. Dingell Drive. After 2.3 miles, take slight right turn onto William G. Rogell Drive. After 0.4 miles, this becomes Merriman Rd. Almost immediately merge onto I-94 E toward Detroit for 15.3 miles. Take Exit 213B (Canada), merge onto I-96 E. After 1.3 miles, take the I-75 N/M-10 exit on the left toward Flint/Civic Center. Almost immediately take the M-10 exit toward Rosa Parks Blvd./Civic-Cobo Center. After about 0.4 miles, take the exit on the left toward M-10/ Lodge FWY/Civic Center. Go 0.2 miles and take the M-10 S exit toward Civic Center. After 0.6 miles, merge onto MI-10 S/John C Lodge FWY. Go 0.6 miles and take the Larned St. exit (Exit 1B) on the left toward Cobo Center. Stay straight to go onto W. Larned St. Turn right onto Washington Blvd. End at 1 Washington Blvd. (Cobo Center).
